Live Coaching Call Week 12 - Recording (27 Feb)

TIMECODED QUESTIONS

00:00 Intro / America’s Cup chat

7:39 I'm curious about the vocabulary used by the best team to call shifts and gusts and all kind of other tactical information on the water. Also passing on info from the boat e.g. pressure in the kite to the helm. Are there effective, proven protocols to solve this problem?

21:52 Communication for singlehanders – what’s the ideal conversation loop in your own head?

24:16 How best to optimise the run with gybing on wind shifts?

29:00 What’s the ideal balance between regattas where you’re trying to score a result, as opposed to process regattas where you’re working on specific goals?

42:11 Hamish, what were you like with cheatsheets and recording info in your early days?

47:18 Do you have any venue information to share about Lake Garda?

51:35 If you are going to a known breezy venue would you select a flatter mainsail to have in your options rather than use a standard main which you would work to flatten off? Is a flatter main more efficient than a fuller one that is flattened with adjustments?

55:26 I’ve noticed that most dinghy racers appear to have very little emotion other than the odd bit of anger on the course. It doesn’t look as if they want to be there, but the coaches have taught them to be able to lay it down on the track each race. I find it difficult to go from my friendly local club to the ragingly unfriendly place which is the youth racecourse/professional adult races. Some classes are more fun than others and so I sail those, but if I wanted to get somewhere big with my campaign, then I would have to race the ‘dirtiest’ classes, e.g. Laser or 49er, where sportsmanship is regularly forgotten.

59:25 I often go into negative spirals in races where I focus on where I could have been if ______ rather than focusing on my boat. What advice do you have for this?

1:02:44 Hamish, since we launched Road To Gold, what have you learnt the most from going through this program with people?
